Barley has long, sharp bristles, and inside these are the yellow grains. Barley is used to make flour and grits, but is also found as an ingredient in many beers and whiskeys. The carbohydrates in the fine flour from barley have a special structure that differs from other grains.

Along with wheat, barley is our oldest cultivated plant, wild varieties occurring throughout the area of ​​the Middle East known as the Fertile Crescent. As with cultivated wheat, attempts were made to develop wild varieties of barley over the course of a few hundred years into varieties that were adapted for cultivation.

Sow in loose soil. The soil does not need to be as finely worked as when sowing vegetable seeds. Seed rate for row sowing is approximately 15-20 grams of seeds/m2, 1-2 dm between rows. For broad sowing (the seeds are thrown out) 20-30 grams of seeds/m2. Suitable sowing depth is approximately 4 cm.
